JOE LaMAY & SHERRI REESE
LaMay & Reese
|
At the heart of it all are Joe LaMay and Sherri Reese, a duo known for their close-knit harmonies and songs that sound like they’ve been lived in. Alongside them, Laurie Leenhouts brings the fiddle to life, while John Stevens lays down the low end on bass - seasoned players who give the music its backbone and lift. Their songs wander through stories of love, hard roads, and the wide American landscape, carried along by honest playing and a deep-rooted feel for the music they love. Joe and Sherri first crossed paths at a song circle back in 1998, and they’ve been making music together ever since. A couple years down the line, they joined up with Laurie Leenhouts on fiddle, John Stevens on mandolin, and Fred Filbrich on bass to form the Genesee Rose Stringband - planting the seeds for the sound they carry on today.

Back in 2004, Joe and Sherri packed up and headed down to Kentucky, where they put down some good musical roots. They became Kentucky Arts Council performers, hosted weekly singarounds, and kept a monthly coffeehouse humming with songs and stories. That same year, they joined in with Bill Knowlton’s Bluegrass Ramble radio show on WCNY-FM, lending their voices to a regular monthly segment. Come 2023, the road brought ’em back home to New York, where they reconnected with old friends Laurie Leenhouts on fiddle and John Stevens on bass. These days, all four call the town of Macedon home, and together they make music as LaMay & Reese and the Three One Fivers. Joe handles guitar and vocals, Sherri brings her banjo and vocal harmony to the mix, and between the two of ’em they’ve written songs that have found their way into the hands of other bluegrass and folk pickers. Laurie’s fiddle runs bright and true, while John’s bass keeps everything grounded and steady.
