Joe LaMay has spent more than fifty years making a living with two things he’s always loved - music and design. Somewhere along the road he figured out how to weave the two together. Over the years he’s had his hands in just about every kind of design work you can imagine, from branding and print pieces to digital graphics and album covers. Folks who’ve worked with Joe know his designs don’t just look nice sitting on a page - they’re built to do the job they’re meant to do.

A life in design

Joe’s design story goes back to the 1970s when he was doing package design for some well-known outfits like Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and French’s Mustard. After learning the ropes and gaining a little confidence, he decided in 1981 to hang out his own shingle and start LaMay Design, offering advertising and graphic design services to businesses both large and small.

Through the years he’s worked with tools like Photoshop and QuarkXPress and developed a sharp eye for typography and layout. But more than anything else, Joe has always believed good design starts with listening. He likes to hear what a client has in mind, then roll up his sleeves and find a creative way to bring that idea to life.

When life and design met

Before long Joe’s love for music began slipping into his design work. In the late 1980s he started an independent label called Local Folkel Records, mainly to help songwriters and acoustic musicians get their music out into the world. That little venture naturally led to designing album covers and CD packaging for a growing circle of artists.

He spent a few years as a contract designer for Oasis Duplication and was featured in Songwriter Magazine for his CD design and packaging.

Over the years Joe has created artwork for musicians such as Garth Hudson of The Band, Matt Morris, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Leslie Ritter & Scott Petito, Douglas Clegg, Pat Maloney, The Dady Brothers, Bernice Lewis, and plenty of other fine performers from the folk, bluegrass, and acoustic music community.

The music side of the story

Music has always been close to Joe’s heart. Since 1998 he’s been performing traditional and original folk and bluegrass music as part of the duo LaMay & Reese. Before that he spent many years playing solo as a singer-songwriter, traveling around with a guitar and a pocketful of songs.

These days he works easily with clients from just about anywhere, handling projects remotely and coordinating directly with printers and CD duplicators to make sure everything comes out just the way it should.

Whether he’s designing for a hometown musician or a well-known company, Joe tries to strike that sweet spot between something fresh and something that’ll still look good years down the road.

So if you’ve got an idea rattling around and need a hand bringing it to life, give Joe a call or drop him a line. Chances are you two will get along just fine—and might even make something pretty special together.
