JOE LaMAY & SHERRI REESE met at a folk song gathering in 1998. They were drawn to each other's music and began performing together. Before long, they gained a reputation for their original songs and old-style harmonies, as well as their on-stage presentation of their favorite traditional and contemporary folk songs.
JOE LaMAY likes to say that he learned to play guitar in high school because he was way too short to play basketball. The truth is, when he was a young man he was drawn to the songs and of Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers, Rolling Stones, and of course, Bob Dylan.
It was through his interest in their music that he studied their roots and influences and began his journey into the world of folk music where he discovered the songs and traditions of America's rich and colorful musical heritage.
Joe began writing songs in the 1970s and released his first original song, Comin' Home to Say Goodbye, in 1976, as part of the folk trio Clutterbuck, LaMay & Kennedy. Following a six year run with the trio, Joe embarked upon a solo career, performing at coffeehouses and festivals throughout the northeast and midwest.
SHERRI REESE comes from a roots music family. Her father played bluegrass and traditional country music all his life. As a young girl, she grew up hearing her father play the melodies and songs of the Carter Family, The Stanley Brothers, Reno and Smiley, Doc Watson, and other mountain musicians.
She began playing guitar in her teens and was drawn to the songs of Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Tom Paxton, Emmylou Harris and other folk music performers. When she began hearing the influence of roots music in their songs, she knew she had come full circle.
LaMAY & REESE performances are always warm, entertaining, and enjoyable. With Joe on guitar, and Sherri on banjo, they present a well balanced collection of songs that are sure to inspire the novice and please the traditionalist.
It has been said that Joe & Sherri "know a good song and write a good song." As testament to their songwriting, a number of their original songs have been recorded by other folksingers and bluegrass bands. Their 2019 release of LaMay & Reese: Songs of Joe LaMay & Sherri Reese in Other Voices features fifteen recorded covers of their original songs.
Since 2004, LaMay & Reese have been contributing monthly music segments to Bill Knowlton's Bluegrass Ramble radio show, heard throughout the northeast on PBS and worldwide on the web. Their segments feature songs and musicians they know and meet in their travels on the road.
